Endearingly Weird: Reykjavík
View of Reykjavík from Hallgrímskirkja
Quirky would be the word to describe Iceland’s culture capital. Reykjavík is made of cozy streets lined with colorful buildings, but don't let the cuteness fool you. The city also has a compact yet exciting nightlife and a vibrant art scene. It's the clashing of elements that make this city so endearingly weird.
Reykjavík offers a lot of variety for its size. To nerd out on history go to 871 Museum to learn about Iceland’s early settlers. For a taste of Icelandic architecture head to Hallgrímskirkja, and see the enchanting view of Reykjavík from above. The structure was inspired by the basalt columns that form naturally in Iceland, making Hallgrímskirkja one of the most unique places for worship. Although also inspired by the basalt landscape, Harpa Concert Hall has a totally different expression, with hexagonal colored glass that’s quirky yet modern. The Reykjavík Art Museum is also worth visiting. The museum is split over three sites: Hafnarhús, Kjarvalsstaoir, and Ásmundur. Your ticket is valid for all three sites, so take advantage of all the artistic inspiration that Reykjavík has to give.

Take a stroll around Lake Tjörnin, and see the swans, ducks, and geese gliding across the water. Explore the old Reykjavík area north of the lake and walk east on Hverfusgata and Laugavegur for all the shops and galleries. Maybe after a break at a café head back west towards Hallgrímskirkja and explore the artsy boutiques along Skólavörðustígur and nearby. Reykjavík has many boutiques like KronKron, Kraum, and Freebird that are fun even if you are just window-shopping.
As for your food options, Reykjavík also has lots to offer. For cheap eats go to the famous hot dog stand Bæjarins Beztu. For a sit-down dinner, Resto, Fish Company, Dill, and Grill Market are all great options. My personal favorite is Sandholt Bakery, where the pastries, candy, and sandwiches are amazing. Although the prices are slightly expensive for a café/bakery, it is still cheaper than sitting down at a restaurant, plus the décor is adorable and comfortable. Eating at Sandholt didn't make me feel like I’m missing out on the restaurant scene at all, especially after two slices of exquisite cake.
Reykjavík is also a good base for all of your outdoor adventures; after all, Iceland’s raw natural beauty lies outside the city. Many tours pick up and drop off all around the city. You can easily schedule a glacier hike or a Northern Lights boat ride during a stay in Reykjavík.
Reykjavík is a charming city with a lot to offer. I’m sure there are many more gems that I did not have time to explore. Feel free to leave a comment below and tell me about your experience in the world’s northernmost capital.
